WEEK TWELVE - MAY 2002
May 9 - If you wake the baby!
Up until now, we have tried not to be one of those "Shush! You'll wake up the baby" houses. We don't make our two older kids tiptoe around the house all day and maybe resent the baby for it.

However, there seems to be some days where waking up the baby is a capital offense. I came home from work today and accidentally let the door slam shut, which creates a very loud bang that resounds through the house. I was met in the hallway by Cheryl, and I could immediately tell she had had "one of those days".

Instead of a pleasant "how was your day at work dear?" or "honey, you've been working hard all day at work, come and relax while I fix dinner", here is what she said.

"If you wake up the baby, you are going to grow breasts and nurse IT back to sleep!"

Yes, she actually called the baby an "it".

It seems that today Joshua had turned into one of those sucking monster things that likes to torment their mothers all day long by attaching themselves permanently to the breast and refusing to let go or fall asleep.

Now, Cheryl is generally far more patient that I am, so I know that when she's had enough, it must have been a VERY long day for her.

That's when it's time for me to drop everything and be the dad for the rest of the evening.

And Joshua, we all know you're really not an "it".

May 10 to 12 - Going out of town.
I had to go out of town for two days this weekend. Well, I didn't really HAVE to. It was for a friend's fortieth birthday party, and I really didn't want to miss it.

Wow, try spending every day with your baby for three months, and then NOT seeing him for two whole days and nights. I really missed him, but something that helped was to talk to him on the phone. Cheryl says that Joshua stared at the phone and smiled when I talked to him. It's important to stay connected.

May 13 - Where were you this morning?
Today I had lunch with Cheryl, and I eagerly grabbed the baby from her to hold him. She said, "Ya, NOW you want to see him! Where were you at five o'clock this morning?"

I thought to myself, "I was sleeping peacefully without a care in the world."

Of course, I didn't say that. I just sympathetically listened to her as she told me how little sleep she got last night.

May 14 - Good Morning Joshua
Cheryl, the three kids, and I were on Good Morning America at 5 AM today, live. We discussed how to share sleep with your baby safely. While we were preparing, I kept worrying about whether or not Joshua would stay asleep during the broadcast. And wouldn't you know it, fifteen minutes before the show he decided to wake up and would NOT go back to sleep. He entered one of his "I'm fussy and I refuse to go back to sleep" episodes.

Thankfully Cheryl managed to expertly calm him down and get him back to sleep in time for the live show. Phew!

May 15 - The running man.
Joshua has begun his morning exercise routine. I wish I had HIS energy in the morning. He wakes up all smiles, then begins practically running in place, pumping his arms and legs vigorously for several minutes. It wears me out just watching him, but it is fun.

Now if only I could start a morning exercise routine.
