WEEK 38 - NOVEMBER 2002
Whose room is it now?
Now having three kids, I don't really expect a lot of privacy. But I do like to feel there is SOMEWHERE in the house I should be able to go where I can sit and relax and watch Star Trek or something. Our living room used to be such a place where Cheryl and I could sit down and relax for a bit.
It is no longer OUR living room.
The other day Cheryl asked me where the baby was, and I answered, "He's in the TOY ROOM. No wait, I mean he's in the LIVING room."
I walked over to the living room to check, just to make sure he was where I left him. There he was sitting on the floor, surrounded by his toys that were spread out all over the room, playing quietly.
I realized that he actually IS in the toy room. Our living room is now Joshua's TOY ROOM.
So there goes my last bastion of tranquil refuge. I suppose there's always the bathroom.
Can't even get a few seconds to enjoy ice cream.
Cheryl and I like to occasionally share a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream on the couch while we watch TV. Well, I guess occasionally isn't the right word, but that's not the point. The point is, this was another one of our relaxing routines that have been dear to us.
No longer. The little turkey has figured out that there is actually something in that carton and on our spoons, and now he has to crawl over, pull himself up and beg for a bite. Well, we're not about to waste Ben and Jerry's on a baby, and he's too young for ice cream anyway.
So now we have to remember to bring a little bowl of something for him too.
I don't remember the first two kids being so needy. Then again, it's been six years.
Nothing's safe anymore.
Our couch has always been where Cheryl likes to keep our mail and other important stacks of paper that need attending to. Now, of course, Joshua thinks everything in the TOY ROOM/LIVING ROOM is his. The sound of crinkling paper has now become a familiar sound in our house, and one that always brings Cheryl running to rescue the day's newspaper or mail.
Cheryl's going to have to find a new place for her piles of paper.
