WEEK THREE - MARCH 2002
Mar. 7 - Joshua's first cold
So, that little stuffy nose has turned into more of a cold, green nose and all. He has a bit of a cough too. Thankfully, it seems pretty mild for now.
Mar. 8 - The first rock-a-bye baby
Joshua has this one mode he gets in where he is too tired to fuss. Tonight I held him cradled in my arms, rocking him back and forth, and he wanted so badly to fuss and cry to be nursed, but he was just too tired. He laid there, looking up at me, and slowly over a few minutes, his eyes started to close. It was so precious. Since my wife likes to nurse him to sleep, I rarely get to enjoy this time with him. We dads really miss out on this going to sleep time. Moms have all the luck.
Of course, you won't see me volunteering much in the middle of the night for this. I guess it doesn't seem so "precious" at four in the morning.
Mar. 9 - Missing the mother-in-law
I realized today that my mother-in-law has been gone for three days, and NOBODY has been picking up the slack, doing the things she had been doing (like cooking, cleaning, cleaning and cleaning). Well, today I figured out that the "nobody" was me! So I spent the day being a good husband and doing lots of cleaning stuff. My wife even pitched in some (I think she is still in that "I just had a baby" mode, and deservedly so). I realized that I will have to be extra helpful for the next few weeks.
Mar. 10 - Our "debut" at church
We decided to make it to church today (after two weeks of sleeping in on Sunday mornings). Babies in church have never bothered me. I have always smiled when I hear an infant squirming and grunting and starting too fuss. It's funny to watch an embarrassed parent rush a screaming baby out of church, because we've all been that parent at one time.
So, I was wondering how Joshua's first time in church would go. Would he sleep peacefully through the hour-and-a-half (as I often inadvertently do myself)? Or would my wife be the lucky one to rush him out of the service as he "sings" praises to God?
Well, lucky for us Joshua slept through most of church. Even luckier for us, there was another baby two rows behind us who grunted and "cooed" the whole time. So any little noises Joshua made weren't even noticed. I'll have to find out who that baby was, so we can sit near him every week.
Mar. 11 - The best part of bathing a baby
Joshua's cord has fallen off, and today we gave him his first real bath. We're lucky, he is one of those "ooooooo, I love warm water being poured over my body" type of babies. Well, after my wife, Cheryl, finished washing him, I draped the towel in my arms, and my wife placed our dripping, but happy, son into the towel. Then, several things happened all at once: 1. I completely melted, because Joshua, with his slicked-back wet hair, his clean face peeking out at me from the folds of the towel, his tiny little warm body all wrapped up and oh, that sweet clean-baby smell, it all hit me at once, 2. Cheryl, whom I think remembered about all these things from our other kids and was greatly anticipating this "after-the-bath" moment for herself, reached out to take the baby back, 3. Cheryl looked into my eyes and realized what I was experiencing, and there was no way she was getting him back, and 4. I took off, almost running, for the couch to sit down with him in my arms and enjoy this moment to the fullest. For those of you dads out there with a new baby, don't miss this. It is simply the best part of bathing a new baby.
I expect that the next bath Joshua gets, it will be while I'm at work so Cheryl doesn't get robbed again.
Mar. 12 - Baby Slings
I spend a lot of time writing. But I also like to spend a lot of time with my kids and my wife. Now we have a new baby that I am getting bonded to. The perfect answer is the baby sling. Joshua fits securely slinged in my lap as I type away on my laptop. I get to enjoy the closeness with him, and still keep up on my work.
Mar. 13 - Baby Swings
Everyone who owns a baby swing will tell you what a lifesaver it is. Great for dinnertime, shower time, bathroom time. Whenever you need a guaranteed 15 minutes of peace and quiet, the swing is your best friend.
Well, we are, as I speak, trying the swing for the first time. And it's not looking good! He doesn't seem to like it, and we are way bummed! (that's slang for disappointed). We are determined, though. He WILL like it, whether he likes it or not. We've had two "swing babies", and we expect a third.
I know, I can't make him fit into my expectations, but I was REALLY hoping he would fit into this one.
His stuffy nose and cold, by the way, are clearing up. Yeah!
