WEEK 72 - JULY 2003
Hide the blood.
So I'm at Gymboree with Joshua (the play place, not the clothing store), and we're having a good old time. I see an old friend from high school that I haven't seen forever come in with her kid. We start chatting a bit as Joshua plays happily a few feet away. I turn my head for just the slightest fraction of a second to look at my friend, and I hear Joshua start screaming. "Krap", I think to myself. Not cuz he's hurt, but because he might have gotten a bump or bruise that I won't be able to hide. I go over to him and find one of his teeth is bleeding. I've no idea what happened. My only thought is "I need to get this bleeding stopped before I bring him home to Cheryl". I was so relieved to find that it was only minor, and the bleeding only lasted a few seconds, and I wasn't going to get into trouble . . . I mean, HE was going to be alright and he wasn't seriously hurt.
I still couldn't figure out what had happened until a few minutes later I discovered his newest favorite game. He likes to lay on top of a large ball, roll forward, and fall flat on his face. Only this time I was right there next to him (where I should be every second so he doesn't get hurt like every good father should be instead of ignoring their child to talk to old friends) and I was able to catch him in the nick of time.
I don't think there was any evidence of his injury (and my negligence) because Cheryl never asked me, "Why is his tooth crooked?" or "Why is there a bump in his lip?" or "Were you spending your time at Gymboree talking to the other moms again instead of playing with your child?"
Maybe she won't read this week's diary entry and I'll be home free.
Room to sleep.
Joshua has always done this quirky thing when Cheryl nurses him to sleep in bed. He often won't nurse to sleep and stay cuddled. Once he's asleep, he'll pull away from Cheryl, roll over, and stay asleep with plenty of elbow room.
He started doing this when Cheryl nurses him to sleep on the couch. He'll be almost asleep, then he'll suddenly pull away, climb down off her lap, lay down on the floor, and go to sleep.
