Does Your Doctor Look Like a Doctor?

A couple months ago I read a research study that showed patients prefer doctors who dress professionally and in white coats. I remember my days at Georgetown where I got to strut the hallways with my team of white-coats and ties. Ahhh, the good old days when I was a “real” doctor. I think that was the last time I ever really dressed like a doctor.

Now, I’m just a small town doc that likes to wear comfortable cotton flannel shirts, casual slacks, NO TIE, and best of all, NO WHITE COAT. In fact, I used to not even wear socks, but after my dad got on me for it I decided at least I could put on socks every morning.

I met a new patient the other day. They were interviewing pediatricians and were looking for someone who seemed a good fit for them. As I introduced myself they said to me, “Wow, you don’t look like a doctor. We like you already.”

That was the best compliment I had all week.

Dr. Jim and I keep joking every year around Halloween that we’re going to put on white coats and come into work dressed up as doctors.
