I can’t even collect a co-pay!

I saw a 2 year old for a rash the other day. Before I examined him he gave me a handful of change. A quick glance estimated it was about 40 cents. I thanked him wholeheartedly and placed the money on the desk.

I proceeded with the exam, but couldn’t identify the rash. I told the mom it looked harmless and she didn’t need to worry. I scooped up the money, put it in my pocket, and began to walk out. I thought it was so cute how he was learning about money and wanted to pay me. I thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice if parents showed that much enthusiasm when they paid their bill?” As I opened the door, he looked at me and said, “Hey. Gimme my money back!” He looked very concerned that I was walking out with his money in my pocket.

I wondered, “Is he asking for the money back because I couldn’t identify his rash?” or “Maybe he thinks he doesn’t have a co-pay?”

I grudgingly fished the 40 cents out of my pocket and handed it back. At least I’d get the mom’s 10 bucks. Or was she going to complain about that too because I couldn’t identify her kid’s rash? I’m glad those co-pays aren’t contingent on me being a good doctor. I still try my best anyway.
