THE MYSTERY OF THE BLUE HANDS

A mom brought her teenage daughter into the office because her hands were blue. And sure enough, mom was right - her hands really were blue. Not just a little blue, they were extremely blue. I was very familiar with a condition called Raynaud's phenomenon, a circulation problem that causes cool, bluish extremities, and told the mom and daughter that this might be the problem. I told her I would call her later and give her some more information (after I went and looked it up). That afternoon, mom called our office, very embarrassed. She said that when they got home, her daughter took off her new blue jeans, and her legs were now blue too. It turns out, she hadn't washed he new jeans before wearing them, and the color was rubbing off onto her hands and legs. I wasn't sure who should feel more foolish - the mom for not washing the jeans, or ME for not figuring out the obvious.
