JANUARY 2007
An Odd Birthday Present
The morning of my 40th birthday… woke up just before sunrise feeling refreshed and energized. Glanced at the clock… “hmm, turned 40 about 2 ½ hours ago, I feel like doing something very special today”. Walked to the other end of the house and sat down at the computer to enjoy the glorious orange glow of the eastern sky. After logging on, I soon navigated to the registration page for the next Ironman triathlon event. It’s the California 70.3 Ironman, a “half Ironman” in Oceanside, California – practically my own backyard. I’ve been thinking about doing this triathlon for a few days now, but I hesitated, and the doubts started to creep into my mind.
“Can I do this?”
“I won’t win”
“Will I be ready?”
Before any more thoughts could fill my head, I quickly clicked SUBMIT…
Now they had my money, and I knew that I just committed the next 12 weeks of my life to trying to finish this Ironman. I chuckled out loud at the enormity of this notion…
I then answered my own questions of self doubt:
“Can I do this?”
The point is that I HAVE to do this. For years, I have always thought it would be fantastic to finish an Ironman, and a half-Ironman is a good first step. I’m not getting any younger, so it’s now or never! I know that I was in good shape… for cycling. But if I was going to swim and run, then I would have start now, before I get any older.
“I won’t win.”
I may not be the first to finish, but I will win. I will win, because…I will finish, and to finish I will need to put in a lot of work over the next three months. Anyone that can gather the motivation required to get ready for this and experience the positive effects on their health – that person is a winner!
“Will I be ready?”
I guess we’ll know the answer to that on the morning of March 31.
I also found it a little sadistic at the use of the word SUBMIT. Of course, they were referring to the registration fee, but there seemed to be a whole other level of meaning to the word “SUBMIT”.
