FEBRUARY 25th, 2007
Breakthrough day!
What a difference a few days can make! I started today not feeling very confident about my scheduled workout. This was to be my long running day. Each week, I have one day that I take a “long run”, and I have been increasing this by one mile each time. The goal was to be up to11 or 12 miles with 2 weeks to go before Ironman. So, today needed to be an 8 mile run if I was to stay on schedule. I highly doubted that I could reach that distance comfortably, especially since I had a very intense day on the bike yesterday. Our group ride got a little competitive going up the hills, and I was a little sore most of the day. But, I remembered all my recovery “secrets” (lots of omega-3’s, Juice Plus+, ice, hydration), and I woke up feeling fresh. I hit the track for a warm-up mile, then a quick stretch, and then I started on the distance. Mile 2, 3 feeling pretty good, tried not to think about stride, just run comfortably. Mile 4 and 5 go by and I am feeling better than I have ever felt! I am able to keep my 7:30 pace, which allows a short 30 second water break each mile – and still stay under my goal of sustained 8 minute miles. This is either very fast or quite slow – depending on the athletic perspective of the individual. For me, it’s no where as fast as I was 20 years ago… but then for a 40 year old ex-fat guy, I’ll take it. That’s one of the big rewards of starting a new sport – the improvement curve is steep! Just a few months ago, I struggled to finish a couple miles, and today I nailed down 8 miles and felt like I could keep going!
