Race experience… the good, bad and the ugly

With my new bike, I was eager to try it out in competition so I entered a local duathlon. This event featured a 5K run, then a 20K bike, then another 5K run. I thought this would be a great event to feel the vibe of competition, and get some good experience of “running off the bike” (this is triathlete lingo for running after riding the bike). It would turn out that I would learn several valuable lessons. First 5K started out very fast, but I kept the fast pace for the first half, then a lot of racers started passing me even though I wasn’t slowing down. As I tried to keep up with them, I was thinking, “Why are these guys going so fast? Don’t they know it’s a long race?!” Here’s lesson #1: Pay attention to the race instructions: There were several races being staged that day: A triathlon, a duathlon and a 5K race – and we all started together! All those guys flying by me were sprinting for the finish – while most of us still had another hour of racing. Needless to say, I finished that first 5K rather quickly, but I was feeling pretty good as I jumped on my bike. Excitement got the better of me and I was riding with all my might, trying to pass as many racers as I could. It was great fun, until, with about a mile to go, I started to think about the 5K that I still needed to run… Also noticed that I had not drunk any of my water! As I set out on the run, it started to rain… hard! Next time, I’ll remember to grab my hat in the transition. That was a wet, lonely run since most of the racers were entered in the triathlon and ended the race with a very short swim. I was out on the road and the only other competitors I could see was someone way ahead of me, and someone way behind me. I felt like I was in some sort of Nike commercial featuring some crazed nut running along a country road getting soaked to the bone. For the last mile, my legs were getting very cold and started to cramp up a bit. As miserable as I was, I kept thinking that at least I would be better prepared for Ironman if it rains – which it has the last 2 years. I managed to stay ahead of whomever that was behind me, and actually finished 2nd in my age group!
