PRESCHOOL IS COMPLAINING MY THREE-YEAR-OLD CAN'T SIT QUIETLY THROUGH GROUP TIME
“My child is three-years-old and attends preschool twice a week for two hours. He turned three May 31. He is probably one of the youngest children in the group. The staff is making a big deal out of "group time". Every time I pick him up they comment on how he did at group time. They complained when he wanted to lie down. The other day one of the staff members put him on time out because he was looking back during group time. Attending group time at all is a big step for him. I told the teacher that I did not have high expectations of sitting still through a group time activity. She said she had high expectations for him and he should be able to sit through it. I think it is a lot to expect of a young three-year-old to sit for more than a few minutes at a controlled activity. He does well if it is interactive, but not passive. How do I talk to the preschool teachers about the situation? I think rewards would work better than punishment and also patience. He has only been to preschool for a total of 24 hours (12 days). I experience anxiety every time I pick him up. I worry what they are going to criticize.”

If you haven’t already, I think you need to find a new preschool. Try to find one that seems to be less rigidly structured – or at least flexible enough to allow for the normal developmental differenced in children. Sounds like you have a great understanding of your child’s abilities, hopefully you can find a preschool with the same.
