"HAIRCUT HORRORS"

HAIRCUT HORRORS
"My son is two and 1/2 and when we go to have his haircut he becomes extremely upset. It is not like it is his first haircut. He has been getting his haircut since he was 9 months old. Only recently has this behavior developed. Is there any thing that my wife and I can do for him so that he will not be so upset? I don't know how much of it is fear and how much of might be defiance."

Now you know why so many two and three year-old boys are running around with such long hair! Throwing a fit during a haircut is pretty common, and I agree with you in that I don’t know if it is fear or defiance or both. Many young children just seem to have something against getting haircuts. Here are a few suggestions that have worked for some parents:

  • Start very young, and get their hair cut frequently. It seems that long periods between haircuts make things worse.
  • Go to a kid-friendly salon where kids can sit in “cartoon character chairs” and watch videos or play games while getting their hair cut.
  • Have grandma cut the hair.
  • Change his name to Samson, and forget the haircuts for a year or two.
