"ENCOURAGEMENT FROM THE PARENTS OF A SLEEPLESS BABY"
ENCOURAGEMENT FROM THE PARENTS OF A SLEEPLESS BABY
"My baby won't sleep" is the subject of many of the questions that I get from parents. I thought it would help to give these parents a glimpse into the future and see how one "high need" child turned out.

You might like to include my story with your others as some encouragement for parents with the non-sleeping variety of baby. . .

Our daughter was born nearly 10 weeks premature, which was very early in 1978. Survival we were told was touch and go. After being through the intensive care unit, in incubators and the works she was finally 'big' enough to come home. She was incredibly alert, very interested in her surroundings - and would hardly sleep at all, and never more than 90 minutes at a time - a few times a day. A true '24/7' baby. I guess we did most of the things you recommended more by instinct, and she grew and somehow we survived. But for 2 years we only had one night's uninterrupted sleep. Yet this young 'high need' girl was I am now sure simply that way because of her general alertness, and her tremendous interest in what was going on. What is she doing now? At 24 she has a degree in bioscience and just finishing her second degree as a doctor. She is always on the go, very enthused with life, does scuba diving and most other adrenalin pumping activities you could name, is a black belt at karate, and has done several other marshal arts. She loves performing in theatre, usually modern versions of Shakespeare.

No, we wouldn't have her any other way. We are very proud of all that she is and all she has done with her life.

So all you parents who have troublesome babies that need lots of attention - you won't regret a minute of it! One day you'll find out what a tremendous investment in the future it will be.
