Keeping Up Good Prenatal Health

You are growing a new life inside you and while this is happening, your own life changes. You have times when you feel very tired or worried, and other times when you feel excited and full of energy. Your body demands more food, more water and more sleep. You lean on your partner, your family and your friends for emotional support. You need time to think and plan and get ready to mother your baby. You must remember that caring for your prenatal health is vitally important. This is how you take care of your baby! To give your baby the best possible place to grow and develop during these critical months, you must take care of yourself.

The Dr. Sears Wellness Institute offers workshops for new and expecting mothers to learn more about how to best care for yourself and your growing baby and how to maintain good prenatal health. These workshops are available throughout the country and can help you learn about what to avoid—as well as what to begin—during your pregnancy, how to prepare your body for birth and how to cope with stress. The strategies taught in the workshops will assist you throughout your pregnancy, and even beyond, as you create and maintain a healthy, satisfying lifestyle. The first workshop, Prepare RIGHT Now, focuses on three areas to get you and your body prepared to carry and deliver a healthy baby into a happy and healthy family: Lifestyle, Exercise and Attitude.

Lifestyle

As an expecting mother, you need to think more deeply about your lifestyle choices. After all, you are now pregnant, and the choices you make about your life will affect both you and your baby—now and in the future. Learning about health hazards that surround you in your daily activities as well as learning about all the changes that take place in your body during pregnancy, and about how your baby grows, will help you take better care of your prenatal health during these important months.

Exercise

Pregnancy may not be the time to start training for a triathlon, but you can still swim, walk and work out on a stationary bike. Staying active will keep you healthy and happy as your baby and your body grow. Exercise will also help you feel good about your body and what it can do. You will learn different stretching and exercise techniques as well as the wonderful benefits of staying active during your pregnancy. Studies show proper exercise and good overall prenatal health leading to an easier birth.

Attitude

Studies show that stress can cause disease. When your mind is anxious, upset or worried, your body responds by releasing stress hormones. A positive attitude toward healthy living will motivate you to get more exercise and eat the right kinds of foods. Doing these things will make you feel good and your positive attitude will get a boost! Your emotional life is an essential part of prenatal health. Having a baby is a stressful life event, whether you are pregnant for the first time or are adding another child to your existing family. Your life is changing and you must adapt. It’s up to you to either make positive changes or fight every challenge as it comes. In fact, pregnancy is an ideal time to learn more about yourself, your feelings and what is most important to you.
